The year 2015 is over—it’s time for ‘16. And who better to bring us into the future than the future? In a few short years, Zendaya has gone from being a young Disney star to a fierce triple-threat to one of the voices of the next generation. At just 19 years old, Zendaya hasn’t shied away from the flames that fame can ignite, whether it be stepping down as the lead of Lifetime’s Aaliyah biopic or responding to Giuliana Rancic, who criticized her for wearing dreadlocks to the 2015 Oscars. No matter the obstacle, Zendaya’s been unafraid. And she’s just getting started.
For Complex’s December/January issue, which highlights the men and women of next year, staff writer Kristen Yoonsoo Kim visited Zendaya’s family home in Los Angeles and hit everything from Zendaya’s upbringing to her new music to speaking out against cultural appropriation.
